Tips & Tricks

If this is your first time working with soft air dry clay, we highly recommend reading our Essential Clay Tips guide to learn the ins and outs of working with soft air dry clay.

  • Step 0

Identify peach, black, brown, red and yellow clay. Also comes with a fine pen.

  • Step 1

Shape a small ball to the size of a grape using the peach clay to make the head.

Tip: Stretch and knead the clay to remove wrinkles and unevenness

  • Step 2

Shape a disc using the brown clay for the hair on the back of the head. Mold it into a bowl.

  • Step 3

Attach the head in the center of the brown clay. Wrap the brown clay around the head. Give a gentle roll to smooth it out.

  • Step 4

Shape two small crescent shapes using the peach clay to make the ears. Flatten them. Attach them on either side of the head.
Set the head aside and let the clay rest for 5 to 10 minutes so that it can firm up to prevent it from getting squished. This helps the clay become less sticky making it easier to lift and adjust pieces later without them sticking together.

  • Step 5

For the body, using black clay in the size of a ping pong ball, shape a small cylinder with a tapered top.

  • Step 6

Press a dent at the bottom using your finger or knuckle to help him stand.

  • Step 7

Shape two long tear drop shapes using the brown clay for the hair on top of the head. Slightly flatten them. Place on top of head with the tips of the hair in front of the ears.

  • Step 8

Shape two shorter tear drop shapes using the brown clay for the fringe.Attach them in front of the previous ones to frame the face.

  • Step 9

Shape a small crescent using the brown clay for the bangs. Attach it on the right half from where the hair parts.

  • Step 10

Roll two small ovals using the brown clay to make the eyes. Attach them on the front of the face. Keep them level, not lower than the ears.

  • Step 11

Roll two thin strings using the black clay to make the glasses. Trim both ends. Form two small rings on your finger. Connect them with a short string to make the bridge. Adjust the length of the bridge and the size of the rings.
Pro Tip: This step is tricky, see video tutorial for more tips and tricks.

  • Step 12

Attach the bridge between the two eyes. Allow the glasses to hover over the eyes.

  • Step 13

Attach the head on the body.

Tip: use water to help the head stick if the clay gets too dry

  • Step 14

Shape two long strings using the red clay and the yellow clay to make a scarf. Put them together, then twist them together. Gently roll to smooth it out.

  • Step 15

Gently flatten the scarf using the base of your palm. Cut one end using scissors. Attach the scarf beginning from the front, then around the neck area, and drape it down the right side. Trim excess clay with scissors.

  • Step 16

Shape two small cone shapes using the black clay for the arms.

  • Step 17

Shape two small balls using the peach clay to make the hands. Roll a short, thin string using the brown clay to make a wand. Gently flatten one hand and wrap it around the wand to hold the wand.

  • Step 18

Attach both hands on each arm. Attach the arms on either side of his body. The hand with the wand should be pointing up.

  • Step 19

Use a black fine pen to draw a little lightning for his scar on the left side of his forehead.
